Sometimes it seems like every “expert” has their own goal setting strategies. But, if you look closely at them, picking them apart, you will see that they all share certain things in common. That’s because there are only a few things to learn.

What is the importance of setting specific goals anyway?

We all have things that we want to achieve in life, unless we are completely satisfied, which is a rarity. Feeling you can’t do any better is not a rarity, but it is really sour grapes. Feeling that something is out of your reach, you decide that you don’t want it anyway.

The things that we want to achieve may be unfocused thoughts, hopes or dreams. Writing these them down on paper, in specific terms, helps to focus them.

When we focus on our goals, rather than letting everyday things get in the way, we are more likely to achieve them. Simply by thinking about them, we set the ball rolling. Things sometimes start to roll along pretty quickly.

Creating goals allows you to be pro-active, instead of simply reactive. In the business world, this is particularly important, but it is important in our private lives, too.

One of the effective goal setting strategies is to turn your list of daily chores into a list of daily goals. If one of your goals is to have a clean house, then daily sweeping is not just a chore, it is a step towards achieving your goals. Just changing the way you think about what you do every day will improve your outlook. You’ll be more “positive”.

All successful strategists recognize the importance of being or thinking positively. There is power in our thoughts, something like magnetism, except that instead of attracting the opposite or negative pole, the positive thoughts attract positive things.

One of the steps included in most goal strategies is to create a deadline. Although some people feel pressured by deadlines, storing the deadline in your brain causes you to be more active.

Some people talk about being flexible with your deadlines. Of course, unforeseen events could interfere with achieving your goal within the specified period of time, planning for the unforeseen is not a good idea. Be firm with your deadlines. Don’t let anything stand in your way.

To sum it up, turn your dreams into written objectives. Set a deadline and remember to be positive. Those are the commonalities of effective goal setting strategies.
